PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape having≥2.0 Gbit/cm<SP>2</SP>surface recording density and having high reliability in running durability and electromagnetic transducing characteristics. SOLUTION: In the magnetic tape 10, a magnetic layer 12 has≥2.0 Gbit/cm<SP>2</SP>surface recording density and heights H1 and H2 of surface swelling parts 13 and 15 in the end parts in the width direction are≤0.1μm.
