PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low molecular weight fluorescent protein derived from an eel, being a monomer and having a low molecular weight and hardly agglutinating, and used as a gene marker in animal or plant cells or individual organism, and for the visualization of an organella in the cell and the visualization of interactions between proteins. SOLUTION: This eel fluorescent protein is provided by obtaining an aqueous extract from the eel, and purifying the fluorescent protein from the extract by the combination of ammonium sulfate salting out and column chromatography to isolate the protein having 16 to 17 kDa molecular weight, 480 to 600 nm fluorescence wavelength and 400 to 540 nm excitation wavelength.
