PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for inexpensively and simply producing anα-methylene-β-alkyl-γ-butyrolactone in high yield and high purity by using an inexpensive starting raw material and a general-purpose reactor. SOLUTION: Aβ-alkyl-γ-butyrolactone represented by formula (I) is reacted with an oxalic acid ester represented by formula (II) and an alcoholate represented by formula (III). A purifying step of distilling off an alcohol formed as a by-product from the reaction liquid containing the resultant enol salt represented by formula (IVa) and/or formula (IVb) is then carried out and formaldehyde, an amine or an alkali metal carbonate are added and reacted.
