PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide boron nitride nanotubes having a controlled dimension of outer walls of multilayer or monolayer boron nitride nanotubes by using a chemical, and a method for manufacturing the nanotubes. SOLUTION: Multilayer or monolayer boron nitride nanotubes are formed with a controlled dimension of outer walls of the outer nanotubes. The method includes a step of adding multilayer boron nitride nanotubes in a mixture solvent comprising water and an organic solvent and subjecting the mixture to ultrasonic treatment to obtain a dispersion liquid, and a step of heating the dispersion liquid in a pressurized chamber so as to control the dimension of the outer walls of boron nitride nanotubes by etching by heating the dispersion liquid. Multilayer or monolayer boron nitride nanotubes having an accurately controlled dimension of outer walls can be obtained. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
