The inventive method for monitoring a particle filter system in the exhaust gas train of an internal combustion engine provides that the load state of the particle filter is determined respectively by a first method, which is independent of the sulphur content of the fuel, and by a second method, which depends on the sulphur content of the fuel. The quotient is formed from the load states that are determined according to these two methods and the sulphur content of the fuel that is used for the internal combustion engine, which affects the ageing of the particle filter system, is derived from this quotient. The invention provides a particularly reliable means of monitoring the particle filter system in the exhaust gas train of an internal combustion engine which is fuelled with fuels of varying quality.
