A method for comparing similarity between moving pictures by searching a moving picture shot is provided to considerably reduce required computing power by preferentially searching the moving picture shot having high content weight from the moving picture, and improve search quality by largely shortening the time required for processing a search query. An original moving picture is indexed by dividing the original moving picture by a shot unit, and using a content feature value, which is robust against modification as existing in the divided shot and sequence information present in the original moving picture. The divided shots are sequentially arranged by assigning priority to the shot having a long length, the smallest accidental shot division factor at the inside of the divided shot, and more feature values robust against the modification. A result is determined by searching the original moving picture based on a sequential database query according to order of representative shots of the inputted moving picture.
