PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sub-chamber type internal combustion engine capable of generating a torch flame having an optimum intensity according to an operating condition. SOLUTION: The sub-chamber type internal combustion engine comprises: a main chamber 4 serving as a main combustion chamber; a sub-chamber 12 provided adjacent to the main chamber 4 and having a smaller volume than the main chamber 4; a nozzle 12a provided on a wall of the sub-chamber 12 and serving as a communication path for communicating between the main chamber 4 and the sub-chamber 12; and a sub-chamber ignition unit 13 capable of setting any ignition timing in the sub-chamber 12. The sub-chamber type internal combustion engine further comprises: a main chamber ignition unit 14 capable of setting any ignition timing in the main chamber 4; and an ignition timing control unit 16 for controlling ignition timing of the sub-chamber ignition unit 13 and the main chamber ignition unit 14. According to an operating condition, a control is executed by the ignition timing control unit 16 so that the main chamber ignition unit 14 first ignites the main chamber 4, and then, the sub-chamber ignition unit 13 ignites the sub-chamber 12.
