Class 103 (1). A tandem brake master cylinder comprises two pistons arranged one behind the other in a common cylinder to pressurize separate front and rear braking circuits, and both of which are mechanically linked to an applying member, e.g. a foot pedal, the piston remote from the applying member having a part passing through the other piston and parts of the two pistons between said other piston and the applying member being disposed to engage opposite ends of a balance beam pivoted to an actuating element of the applying member. The actuating element can be moved laterally to adjust the relation between the forces applied to the two pistons. As shown, a rearward extension of the front piston 16 in the form of a shaft passes through the rear piston 17 and is formed at its rear end with an offset part 18. A balance beam 23 pivoted at 26 within a fork 27 of the actuating element 28 engages the part 18 and also a similar offset part 19 of the piston 17. Pivoting of the beam 23 to allow for differing rates of movement of the pistons and different brake clearances of the two braking circuits is allowed by clearance 29 in the fork 27. Element 28 is slidable in a manually-rotatable eccentric sleeve 30 to enable movement of the element 28 laterally to vary the leverage of the beam 23 on the parts 18, 19 so that a driver can vary the front/rear braking force relationship, e.g. according to the road surface conditions. Play s is provided in the fork 27 to allow for movement of the element 28 in the direction of the axis of pivot 26. A projection 36 of the part 19 engaging a groove in the casing 31 to prevent rotation of the assembly about the axis of the cylinder. |
