PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser capable of obtaining laser beams polarized in the radial direction, while the sectional shape is annular. SOLUTION: A face light-emitting laser has a configuration, with a laminate containing an active layer 43 and a two-dimensional photonic crystal 45 held between a first electrode 471 and a second electrode 472. In this case, the first electrode 471 has an annular shape. Light, emitted by injecting current to the active layer 43 by applying voltage between the first and second electrodes 471, 472, allows intensity distribution to be annular in the two-dimensional photonic crystal 45, since the first electrode 471 is annular. Since such intensity distribution is formed, laser beams that have an annular sectional shape and are polarized in the radial direction are oscillated from the two-dimensional photonic crystal 45. The obtained laser beams allow the diameter to be reduced, as compared with a diffraction limit by a condensing lens, and can be suitably used for an optical pickup, or the like.
