PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a function required in the field of consumer appliances by reducing alterations on a host device side as far as possible. SOLUTION: When a free space management table with information described therein on a free space of a storage section 20 managed by logical block addresses is transferred from a host device 1, the free space management table is stored in the storage section 20. The free space management table stored in the storage section 20 is read and developed in a memory 27. According to a predetermined command transferred from the host device 1, the free space management table developed in the memory 27 is referred to, and data transferred from the host device 1 is recorded in a free space of the storage section 20. After completion of recording operation, the free space management table developed in the memory 27 is updated, and information on the updated free space management table is transferred to the host device 1.
