PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recognize the state of the whole of an image forming system in a short period of time without increasing signal wires other than a data signal wire and a clock signal wire which are required for a clock synchronization type serial communication, and at the same time, to increase the reliability of the communication. SOLUTION: An optional cassette control CPU 302 keeps a CMD signal switch 308 under a non-connected state, and therefore, a device ID designating command is not transmitted to an optional cassette control CPU 303. When a device ID command is received under a state in which a device ID is not set, the optional cassette control CPU 302 registers the designated device ID (device ID=1) as a self ID, and sets the CMD signal switch 308 under a connected state. An engine control CPU 301 transmits the device ID designating command which has designated another ID number (e.g., device ID=2) when confirming that the device ID (device ID=1) is set for a connected optional paper feeding cassette.
