PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface modification method of a die and various components which are subjected to surface treatment such as nitriding and hard coating after application of shot peening. SOLUTION: In the surface modification method of the die and various components, the surface of the die or various components is projected with a projection material having a particle size of 10-500μm, a hardness of 500-2,000 HV, spherical shape, and a density of 5-20 g/cm<SP>3</SP>at a rate of 50 m/sec or more, thereafter nitriding is applied. The base material to be projected has a hardness of 400 HV or more before projection, and has such a softening resistance that the change of the hardness inside before and after nitriding is 150 HV or less. In the method, the shot peening is applied before nitriding, thereafter nitriding at 200-500°C for 30 hours or less is applied. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
