PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain reduction in output and efficiency of an external combustion engine, without directly detecting the temperature of a heating object part. SOLUTION: This external combustion engine has a vessel 11 fluidly sealed with a working liquid 12, heating means 13 and 30 heating and vaporizing the working liquid 12 in the vessel 11 and a cooling means 14 cooling and liquefying steam of the working liquid 12 vaporized by being heated by the heating means 13 and 30, and outputs displacement of the working liquid 12 caused by a volumetric variation in the steam by being converted into mechanical energy, and has pressure adjusting means 16, 60 and 63 adjusting internal pressure Pc of the vessel 11 and a control means 21 controlling the pressure adjusting means 16, 60 and 63 on the basis of the temperature T1 of the heating object part 11a for vaporizing the working liquid 12 among at least the vessel 11.
