PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure a residual gas quantity by a relatively easy and practical method with an operation load reduced. SOLUTION: An overlap period of an intake valve and an exhaust valve is divided into the first half and the latter half, and approximate characteristic lines L1 and L2 of an exhaust valve passing gas quantity dMex are calculated on the respective periods PRDFST and PRDLTR. In a desirable form, a residual gas quantity Megr is calculated by adding calculated Mex1 and Mex2 to an IVO time cylinder gas quantity Mcivo, by calculating a blowout gas quantity Mex1 and a blow-back gas quantity Mex2 of exhaust gas by a geometric calculation based on the calculated approximate characteristic lines L1 and L2.
