PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for stably producing methionine without having any corrosion of an equipment for recovering methionine by heat-treating methionine dimer in producing the methionine from 5-(β-methylmercaptoethyl) hydantoin. SOLUTION: This method for producing the methionine by hydrolyzing the 5-(β-methylmercaptoethyl) hydantoin by using potassium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate or potassium oxide, then crystallizing under a carbon dioxide gas pressure, separating and obtaining methionine, then heat-treating at least a part of filtrate circulated and reused for the hydrolysis of the hydantoin, and recovering the methionine by decomposing the methionine dimer contained in the filtrate is provided by using a ferrite-based stainless steel containing 17.0 to 32.0 wt.%, Cr element, 1.0 to 3.0 wt.% Mo element and≤0.6 wt.% Ni element, or zirconium as a material of an equipment for performing the heat-treatment and recovering.
