The unit has an air bag connected with a rigid retainer part e.g. housing, by a fastening unit, where the fastening unit comprises an element with a head and a pin (24). A squeezing ring (26) is squeezed on an attachment section (24a) of the pin. The attachment section of the pin includes a circumferential rib (25) squeezed into the squeezing ring in an installed condition. A retaining plate (14) of a gas generator is connected with the housing by the fastening unit.
