<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup which has a tilted liquid crystal optical element formed by integrating a liquid crystal panel for aberration correction and a liquid crystal panel for an nλ/4 plate. <P>SOLUTION: This liquid crystal optical element (100) has a first liquid crystal layer (110) having a first rubbing direction (111) for aberration correction, a second liquid crystal layer (120) having a second rubbing direction (121) and formed integrally with the first liquid crystal layer, and a transparent electrode (155) to apply a voltage to the second liquid crystal layer to control the phase quantity of a light beam passing the second liquid crystal layer. The angle (ψ) between the first and second rubbing directions is determined so that the liquid crystal optical element functions as an nλ/4 plate depending on the tilt angle (α).
