<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device having a high contrast ratio, and to manufacture such a high-performance display device at a low cost. <P>SOLUTION: In a display device having a display element between a pair of light-transmissive substrates 101 and 102, polarizer-including layers which have different extinction coefficients are stacked so that absorption axes are in a parallel Nichol's state, on the outside of each light-transmissive substrate. Here, transmission axes of one of a pair of stacks of polarizers and those of the other stack of polarizer which interpose the display element are deviated from a cross Nichol's state.
