PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and an image processing method capable of generating an excellent image signal by more rationally composing high and low output signals of two kinds depending on a scene. SOLUTION: An imaging section 12 of a digital camera (imaging apparatus) 10 includes main pixels / sub pixels and outputs high and low output signals of two kinds. An operation section 18 and a monitor 30 are provided to a rear side of the digital camera 10, and a user operates a cross key 28 or the like of the operation section 18 to be able to select any of image quality modes displayed on the monitor 30. When a dynamic range preferential mode is selected, the digital camera 10 smoothly composes the two kinds of the output signals to produce an image signal whose dynamic range is extended. When a resolution preferential mode is selected, the digital camera 10 does not compose the output signals of the main pixels / sub pixels to secure the resolution. When a sensitivity preferential mode is selected, output signals of the main pixels are added to output signals of the sub pixels to increase a saturation point of the output signals of the main pixels thereby increasing the sensitivity.
