PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect gear jumping in the transfer mechanism of an optical pickup. SOLUTION: The optical pickup 310 is transferred in the radial direction of an optical disk 10 by a stepping motor 100. A control part 330 which receives a seek operation instruction from a host device drives the stepping motor 100 through a controller 340 and seeks the optical pickup 310 to a target address. When servo control by a focus servo 12 is interrupted, the control part 330 judges that the gear jumping of the transfer mechanism has occurred and interrupts the seek operation of the optical pickup 310.
