PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately estimate a cylinder suction air temperature and the cylinder suction air volume used for controlling an engine, in the engine for variably controlling an operational characteristic of an intake valve. SOLUTION: This engine 1 variably controls the operational characteristic (opening/closing timing and a lift quantity) of the intake valve 104, and is constituted so that the estimated cylinder suction air temperature Tc is used for controlling the engine by estimating the cylinder suction air temperature Tc sucked in a cylinder on the basis of a detected upstream side intake temperature Tm and an intake valve temperature by detecting the temperature of the intake valve 104, and detecting an upstream side intake temperature Tm on the intake upstream side of the intake valve 104.
