PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sulfur compound adsorbent capable of efficiently adsorbing/removing a sulfur compound contained in a gas even at a low concentration and having a high adsorption capacity. SOLUTION: A method of manufacturing a sulfur compound adsorbent comprising a product obtained by heating a sulfuric acid containing crystalline composite hydrous oxide of zinc (II) or zinc (II) and copper (II) or cobalt (II) comprises the step of adding zinc (II) oxide to a water solution of at least one metal selected from the group of zinc (II), copper (II) and cobalt (II) to cause a reaction under the presence of sulfuric acid ions to precipitate the sulfuric acid ion containing crystalline metal hydrous oxide represented by formula of M<SP>++</SP>(OH)<SB>y</SB>(SO<SB>4</SB><SP>--</SP>)<SB>(2-y)/2</SB>*mH<SB>2</SB>O, wherein M<SP>++</SP>represents Zn<SP>++</SP>or a mixed metal ion of Zn<SP>++</SP>and Co<SP>++</SP>or Cu<SP>++</SP>, y satisfies 0≤y≤0.7, and m satisfies 0<m≤3.
