The method involves supplying rich and poor fuel-air mixture in two stages and combusting catalytically. A partial oxidation of the rich mixture takes place in one stage of catalytic combustion and poor mixture is guided in a bypass flow. The oxidized rich mixture and the poor mixture are set with each other in a poor catalytic combustion. A fuel containing mixture is mixed with withdrawn exhaust gas of the poor catalytic combustion and converted completely in homogeneous, poor gaseous phase combustion. An independent claim is also included for a device formed as hybrid burner for the execution of the method.
