Preparing conducting- or semiconducting crystalline metal oxide particles in liquid phase comprises: (a) dissolving at least two metal salts containing polyol in liquid phase, and adding water and base to the obtained mixture to give a dispersion; (b) microwave irradiation of the dispersion obtained in step (a) to precipitate the metal hydroxide and/or metal oxide hydroxide; (c) condensing the metal hydroxide and/or metal oxide hydroxide onto the metal oxide particles and removing the water and hydrolysis product from the solution. An independent claim is included for conducting- or semiconducting crystalline metal oxide particles obtained using the above method.
