The method involves moving a plunger (2) with a gear rod (3) in a pressing table (20) direction, and accelerating a piston (6) in an operating cylinder (7) in a movement direction of the rod and the plunger before beginning of force flow over two tool halves at the plunger and the table. A coupling jaw (5) is closed when synchronization is provided between the rod and the piston. The force for the power stroke is induced into the plunger by the cylinder over the piston, coupling jaw and the rod. An independent claim is also included for a hydraulic press.
