An apparatus and a method for outputting multimedia data are provided to convert multimedia data into multimedia data of formats supported by a media center extender and output the converted multimedia data. A data processing unit(320) receives multimedia data. A control unit(330) compares a specific compression format supported by a media center extender with a compression format of the multimedia data. When the specific compression format is identical to the compression format of the multimedia data, an output unit(310) outputs the multimedia data. When the specific compression format is difficult from the compression format of the multimedia data, an encoding unit(350) encodes the compression format of the multimedia data as the specific compression format. A communication unit(370) transmits the encoded multimedia data.
