1,153,144. Monoazo pigments; colouring oils, fats, waxes, greases, lacquers, solvents, inks, polishes and motor spirit. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 July, 1966 [3 Sept., 1965], No. 37694/65. Headings C4A, C4P, C5F, C5G and C5W. The invention comprises monoazo pigments of the general formula free from hydrophilic groups i.e. carboxylic, sulphonic acid and hydroxyl groups, and wherein R and R 1 are each alkyl groups containing at least 2 carbon atoms, e.g. ethyl, and at least one of the two aromatic nuclei carries one or more unsubstituted methyl or ethyl groups at least one of which is ortho to the azo group. They are prepared by diazotizing an amine of the aniline series and coupling to an optionally substituted N,N- dialkyl aniline coupling component. The pigments are used in solution in, e.g. a hydrocarbon ester or ketone to colour oils, fats, waxes, greases, lacquers, other solvents, plastics, inks, polishes, and motor spirit. In Example 8 a wax polish is prepared by warming together 1 part by weight each of carnauba wax, paraffin wax, beeswax and 4 parts white spirit, and adding 0À05% to 0À2% by weight of xylene solutions of the pigments prepared by coupling diazotized 2,4- dimethylaniline or aniline with N,N-diethylm-toluidine. In Examples 1-7 xylene solutions of various monoazo pigments of the above formula are used to colour petrol or oil to aid identification. |
