A centrifuge for separating impurities from dirty lubricating oil comprises a hollow rotor 24 which is mounted in a housing 22 and is provided with a baffle plate 40 for deflecting oil entering through an inlet 32 radially outwardly into the rotor and with radial vanes 44 for imparting the rotary motion of the rotor to the oil, the clarified oil flowing from an unobstructed axial zone 28 inside the rotor to a space 56 in the housing through channels 50, 52 formed in the vanes and the rotor wall and the separated impurities migrating from the zone 28 into trap zones 46 between adjacent vanes. The vanes 44 are formed within a disposable cartridge 26, e.g. of asbestos-filled phenol-formaldehyde resin, located within the rotor casing by means of ridges 140 on the cartridge engaging slots 142 in the casing. The cartridge may be made of one piece or of sections arranged end-to-end. The housing 22 is secured to an engine or other mounting by means of an end plate 68 bolted thereto. The rotor is coupled to a shaft 116 having splines 118 for connection to a power source. The clarified oil is removed from the space 56 through an outlet 86 which is connected to the engine. Cleaning of the centrifuge is effected by removing the end cover 70 of the housing 22, withdrawing the entire rotor 24, removing the end plate 92 and extracting the cartridge 26 which is discarded and is replaced by a new one. In a modification, the rotor has no separate cartridge and the vanes are joined or formed integrally with the inner surface of the rotor casing. The entire rotor may be formed of synthetic resin.
