Apparatus for cutting webs into sheets and having an automatic sheet sampler, as described in Specification 972,218 is modified in that a plurality of such web cutting apparatuses are juxtaposed and adapted to slit the webs longitudinally into strips of different width and subsequently cut them into sheets of different length, the length of sheets cut from each web being equal, and the sampler is adapted to sense the leading edges of the sheets to actuate a sheet diverting means, when the leading edges of all the sheets delivered from the juxtaposed web cutting apparatuses pass the sheet diverting means simultaneously. The sheet sampler is modified and provided in addition to the sheet diverting means energizing and de-energizing cams 108, 109 (Fig. 2) with short and long sheet proximity cams 110, 111, a set of such cams being provided for each apparatus, mounted on individual shafts and adapted to close microswitches which close electrical contacts in a control circuit having a selector switch for selection of the sheet length with respect to which the control is effected. Assuming the longest sheet is taken as reference a selector switch 113, Fig. 8, in a proximity circuit of the control circuit is set to a position " 2 " so that the diverting means 66 (Fig. 18) are operated by the cams 108bs, 109bs. In this condition relay 133 is energized via contacts 135a, 132b, causing energization of relay 134 through contact 133b so as to prepare the frequency sampling control circuit including channel switch 136, automatic frequency sampling switch 125 and holding circuit 134a and 131a. Depression of either switches 136 or 125 energizes relay 131 which is self-holding through the closed contacts 134a and 131a and prepares for action the proximity cam switch circuit by closure of contact 131b. When the short and long sheet proximity cam switches 111as and 110bs are closed simultaneously relay 132 is energized to open the normally closed contact 132b thereby conditioning the sheet diverting means for operation when the normally closed switch 108bs is opened by the cam 108b. Deenergization of relay 133 causes closure of the normally open contact 133c to energize the coil of solenoid 127 of the sheet diverting means 66 until contact 134c is opened on de-energization of relay 134 by actuation of sheet diverting means de-energizing switch 109bs. Overlapping belt conveyer construction.-Overlapping belt conveyer 67 (Fig. 1B) is driven at a lower speed than the preceding conveyers 60 or 62 so as to overlap the cut sheets to facilitate their stacking in the primary layboy. Since the sheets in adjacent streams are of different widths and differential speeds are necessary for sheet delivery the conveyer is constituted by a plurality of rollers 96 (Fig. 10) each provided with axial holes for engagement with pins 98 the required number of rollers 96 connected together axially corresponding to the width of the sheets. Each roller is associated with an endless belt and each assembly of connected rollers is driven by a separate variable-speed chain sprocket 83, 83a and adapted to be brought to rest intermittently by brakes 99, 99a. Layboy construction.-Sampling layboy is mounted on wheels 142 (Figs. 1B, 1C) for transverse movement with respect to the cutters and includes divider plates 160 (Fig. 12) setable to the desired sheet width by racks and pinions 156, 158 via shafts and hand wheel 157, 159, the length of the sheets being set by stop fingers 153 detachably rested on bars 151 moved forwardly or rearwardly with respect to the cutters by racks 150 operated by hand wheels 152. Stop fingers 153 terminate in upwardly extending blades 155, which are narrow at their bases and broad at their tips. Jogger fingers 148 mounted on a transverse rock shaft 147 tap the trailing edges of the sheets into neat stacks.</p>
