1,064,755. Universal joints. TORRINGTON CO. Oct. 16, 1963 [Oct. 24, 1962], No. 40793/63. Heading F2U. A constant-velocity-ratio universal joint comprises spherical segments 16, 17, 18 which are freely mounted for independent angular movement on a spindle 14 between part-spherical cups 10, 11 on the ends of a driving shaft 8 and driven shaft 9. As shown, each cup carries three uniformly-spaced rollers 13 engaging grooves in the segments, in a modification the segments carry the rollers which engage grooves in the cups. In operation the segments 16-18 shift relatively to each other during rotation by an amount determined by the inclination of the shafts 8, 9 and rotate in the plane bisecting the angle between the shafts. A lubricant retaining casing is formed by cover-plates 24 fastened by a clamping ring 27 fitting over adjoining flanges of these plates.
