The system comprises a plurality of seismic transmitters (12), at least one seismic source array (11), and a processor (13). Each seismic source array (11) comprises a plurality of seismic source-array elements (17) and near-field sensors (18), wherein each near-field sensor is mounted within the vicinity of a seismic source-array element. The processor (13) is adapted to determine the relative positions of the seismic source-array elements from the transmitted seismic signals which are received by the near-field sensors on the seismic source array. A second embodiment of the invention uses the transmitters on the seismic source array instead of a separate transmitter array. The position of the seismic source array elements is determined from the travel times of the transmitted seismic signals - i.e. the time interval between the firing time and the receiving time. Obviously, for a more accurate reading, the velocity of sound in the medium must be accounted for - usually by using a sound velocity sensor. |
