A catalyst suitable for use in particulate filters (DPF) capable of trapping particulate matter (PM) contained in diesel engine exhaust gas, in particular, a combustion catalyst for particulate matter contained in diesel engine exhaust gas which comprises a perovskite composite oxide having an NO adsorption region in the range of 200 to 450°C. This combustion catalyst enables low-temperature combustion of PM, and due to use of no precious metal, is inexpensive, and due to no evaporation of constituent materials at exhaust gas temperature, excels in durability. The above perovskite composite oxide has the structural formula RTO 3, substantially not containing Na, wherein R is at least one member selected from the group consisting of La, Sr, Ba, Ca and Li while T is at least one member selected from the group consisting of Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Ga, Zr, Mo, Mg, Al and Si.
