An apparatus and a method for performing an HARQ(Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest) in a wireless communication system are provided to optimize a transmission rate by adjusting a modulation and coding scheme and the quantity of redundancy information according to a channel environment. A method for performing an HARQ in a wireless communication system includes the steps of: determining channel status information of a packet by using the channel status information of a previous cycle(301); determining an instantaneous transmission rate for optimizing the transmission rate, and the quantity of redundancy information for re- transmission according to the determined channel status information(305); and re-transmitting the redundancy information according to the determined quantity of redundancy information and the instantaneous transmission rate in case of a re- transmission request.
