A cosmetic composition comprising the extract of Rumex crispus L. is provided to prevent skin aging by promoting skin cell growth and collagen biosynthesis, inhibiting activity of elastase and increasing skin immunity, and moisturize the skin without side effects. A cosmetic composition for preventing skin aging and moisturizing the skin comprises 0.0001 to 20.0 wt.% of the extract of Rumex crispus L. which is prepared by extracting Rumex crispus L. with a solvent selected from water, C1-C4 anhydrous or hydrous lower alcohol including methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol, a mixed solvent thereof, acetone, ethyl acetate, chloroform or 1,3-butyleneglycol. The cosmetic composition is formulated as solution, suspension, emulsion, paste, gel, cream, lotion, powder, soap, surfactant-containing cleansing, oil, powder foundation, emulsion foundation, wax foundation or spray.
