METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR EFFICIENTLY MANAGING PDCP(PACKET DATA CONVERGENCE PROTOCOL) BUFFER IN MOBILE TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEM

A method and an apparatus for buffering Tx packets in a mobile communication system are provided to minimize the signaling between an AGW(Access GateWay) and an ENB(Enhanced Node B) by enabling a PDCP(Packet Data Convergence Protocol) entity to independently discard Tx packets according to regular conditions. If the RRC entity of a network decides not to use a PDCP buffer(725), the RRC entity transmits a PDCP buffering disable message to the RRC entity of a UE(User Equipment)(730). Also the network RRC entity transmits the PDCP buffering disable message to the PDCP entity of the network(735). The UE RRC entity, receiving the PDCP buffering disable message, directs the PDCP entity of the UE not to store PDCP SDUs(Service Data Units) in the PDCP buffer(740). The PDCP entity of the network and the PDCP entity of the UE do not store PDCP SDUs according to the PDCP buffering disable message(745,750). Afterwards, in case the network RRC entity decides to store PDCP SDUs in the PDCP buffer(755), the network RRC entity transmits a PDCP buffering enable message to the UE RRC entity and the network PDCP entity(760,765).
