A buttonhole sewing machine is provided to allow a user to perform freely the switching of an operation mode even during a sewing operation, by using a stop controlling unit, an operation mode memorizing unit, and an operation controlling unit. A switch operating unit gives an instruction for switching an operation mode. When the instruction for switching the operation mode is given by the switch operating unit during a sewing operation, a stop controlling unit(11) temporarily stops the sewing operation by the instruction unit of sewing data. A state memorizing unit stores the progress state of the sewing operation at the temporary stopping time of the operation mode. An operation controlling unit continues the sewing operation mode from the temporary stopping time of the operation mode in a switched operation.
