A method of welding superalloy articles is provided to increase fatigue life of the superalloys and further extend expected lives of the entire assembly and components accordingly by forming an improved welding interface between nickel-based superalloys while reducing residual stresses without forming cracks in a welding joint. A method of welding superalloy articles comprises the steps of: attaching a buttered layer(14) to a first article formed from a superalloy(12); attaching a buttered layer to a second article made of a superalloy; relieving residual stresses between the buttered layer and the superalloy; establishing consistent close adhesion surfaces at the buttered layers of the articles; and, welding the mating contact surfaces of the articles to each other to form a welded assembly(24), wherein after welding, a heat treated area(20) exists within the buttered layers. The step of attaching the buttered layer to the superalloy further comprises the following steps of: attaching the buttered layer to a nickel-based superalloy; attaching the buttered layer to a gamma' strengthened nickel-based superalloy; or attaching the buttered layer to a gamma' strengthened nickel-based superalloy containing aluminum and/or titanium.
