[Also in Division G1] A gas bearing for use in a gyrocompass (see Division G1) is fed with gas from chambers as 19, Fig. 6, through ducts 25, a construction in the form of a punctured aluminium foil stuck over the entrance to the duct 25 in the chamber 19. The length of the duct 25 should then be at least eight times its diameter to avoid turbulence. Alternatively a porous lamina may be used. The gap 12 between the bearing parts may be uniform over the bearing area (Fig. 1, not shown) or may have relatively wider areas (Fig. 3, not shown) in which case these wider areas serve mainly as supply passages to the remaining areas which form the gas bearing proper. |
