A method and an apparatus for controlling a projection-type image display appliance are provided to differentially employ a rotation speed of a cooling fan according to a lamp condition, so that the optimum cooling condition is provided. An apparatus for controlling a projection-type image display appliance includes a key input module(700), the first temperature detector(100), the second temperature detector(200), and a controller(300). The key input module is used to input a user's requirement command. The first temperature detector detects the peripheral temperature of a lamp. The second temperature detector detects the temperature in a space where the projection-type image display appliance is installed. The controller determines if an image signal is input to perform a control operation such that the lamp is differentially driven. The controller selectively controls the driving of a cooling fan according to the determination result.
