A method and a system for upgrading software of a broadcasting receiver are provided to the broadcasting receiver to determine if software upgrade is so important that it has to be manually achieved or if the software upgrade selectively achieved. A software upgrade information, which is additional information included in a transport stream received through a broadcasting channel specified as a predetermined frequency band, is parsed(S301). It is determined if data used to upgrade the software is broadcasted through the broadcasting channel and software upgrade has to be manually achieved based on the passed software upgrade. The data for the software upgrade is received, so that the software upgrade is achieved if the data is broadcasted, and if the software upgrade has to be manually achieved.
