An isolated nucleic acid or nucleic acid fragment encoding an abscisic acid-induced protein kinase (PKABA) polypeptide from a ryegrass (Lolium) species. Also disclosed is a method of modifying a plant response to an environmental stimulus by introducing into the plant an effective amount of nucleic acid. Also disclosed is the use of a nucleic acid as a molecular genetic marker.
