A cathode catalyst for a fuel cell, and a membrane electrode assembly for a fuel cell containing the cathode catalyst are provided to improve catalytic activity and efficiency in an oxygen reduction reaction. A cathode catalyst comprises a compound represented by Ir_y M_z O_x, wherein M is Ag or Au; 1<=x<=15 by atom%; 5<=y<=70 atom%; and 15<=z<=95 atom%. Preferably the cathode catalyst has an average particle size of 2-4 nm and is supported on a support, and the support is a carbon-based material. Preferably the cathode catalyst is used in an alkali electrolyte fuel cell. |
