The source has a clock (11) for generating synchronization information, and a packet formation stage for generating a sequence of packets. An output stage transmits the packets via a packet communication network, and a timestamp stage inserts, in each packet, a transmit time derived from the synchronization information generated by the clock. The output stage is organized for transmitting packet bursts. Each burst has a set of packets where time difference between the consecutive packets of the same burst is lower than time difference between consecutive bursts. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a combination of a synchronization source and a destination apparatus (2) a method for transmitting synchronization information over a packet network.
