The method involves activating an automatic speed regulator (5) to be in a service state. The regulator is deactivated to move from the service state to an unserviceable state in which the regulator does not interfere in controlling a propulsion unit of the vehicle. The regulator is automatically deactivated when a change of an operating condition of the vehicle and/or the unit is detected according to a preset criterion. A set point speed received at every moment by the regulator is defined from an instantaneous position of an accelerator pedal (A) when the regulator is in the service state. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for implementing a method for controlling a speed regulator of a motor vehicle (2) a motor vehicle.
