<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accelerate a hybrid vehicle more smoothly when it is driven at low speeds, the hybrid vehicle performing torque assist during which the output of an engine is assisted by a motor. <P>SOLUTION: The amount Tmg of torque supplied from the motor 2 to the engine 1 is determined using the product of the amount g (dθ/dt) of motor torque based on the time rate dθ/dt of change of accelerator opening θ and a vehicle speed coefficient h(v) determined based on vehicle speed v.
