<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing an increase of groundwater pollution due to nitrate nitrogen generated when polluted water resulting from livestock excretion infiltrates underground, at a low cost without maintenance for a long period of time. <P>SOLUTION: A granular material containing sulfur and carbonates, and having an average particle size of 1-50 mm and a sulfur content of 50-90 wt.% is dispersed at an amount of 20-1,000 kg per m<SP>2</SP>in the soil into which the polluted water containing nitrate nitrogen or a nitrogen compound forming nitrate nitrogen in the soil infiltrates, which prevents the groundwater pollution due to nitrate nitrogen.
