PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display an image of higher resolution by increasing pixel density with simple constitution without changing an optical system layout. SOLUTION: An image display device includes a lighting light source, a modulating element which displays an image, a projection optical system, and an optical path separating element which separates illumination light from the lighting light source to the modulating element and imaging light traveling to the projection optical system. Then an image forming apparatus is characterized in having a displacing means of displacing the optical path separating element. Consequently, an optical path shifting function can be added without varying the optical path length of the projection system and the number of pixels can be increased without impairing the layout of the optical system.
