PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce/eliminate variation of engine output caused by difference of ambient pressure during highland start or the like. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a variable compression ratio mechanism changing nominal compression ratio of a reciprocating internal combustion engine, a control part driving and controlling the variable compression ratio mechanism toward target compression ratio, and an ambient pressure sensor detecting ambient pressure, and establishes target compression ratio tεaccording to ambient pressure. When ambient pressure (sensor output value) is lower than standard ambient pressure such as highland start, the target compression ratio tεis corrected to increased side of standard target compression ratio tε0.
