<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell having a power generation performance which does not deteriorate even in the operation start and the like and in operation at an anode dead end. <P>SOLUTION: The fuel cell comprises: a solid electrolyte membrane; catalytic electrode layers formed on surfaces on both sides of the solid electrolyte membrane; gas diffusion layers formed on the catalytic electrode layers; and separators formed on the gas diffusion layers. In an anode including the catalytic electrode layer and the gas diffusion layer formed on one side of the solid electrolyte membrane, a nitrogen gas holding part which holds nitrogen gas is provided in a part contacting with the solid electrolyte membrane on the downstream side in the flowing direction of the gas in the anode.
