PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for detecting a position that is reliable and highly accurately even when the power supply is turned to ON, and is easily reduced in size, by receiving a signal of monotonical increase or decrease in the movement direction of a main scale. SOLUTION: The device for detecting a position comprises a light source 1, a collimate lens 2, a main scale 3 having an optical pattern 5 synthesizing a stripe pattern of a cycle P and a triangle pattern, and a plurality of light-receiving elements 8 for outputting different phase signals by the relative movement of the main scale 3. In the device, the light-receiving elements 8 are formed by overlapping MIS photo diodes and junction diodes so as to divide an aperture at a predetermined ratio, and are designed to remove a signal component of a period P from outputting signals. With the structure, the signal of monotonical increase or decrease to the movement direction of the main scale can be obtained and thus the reliability can be improved at high accuracy.
